What you need
Have last year’s filed account, every bank statement through the anniversary date, and the register open. Last year’s ending figures are this year’s starting figures. Copies of the statements and receipts, and the bond if any, are attached to the account.
The guardianship year ends on the anniversary of your appointment, or on another date the court or trust clerk has agreed to. The court or trust clerk can extend the 60 days for good cause. Rule 10-706(b)(1) (opens in a new tab)
The example follows Eleanor Vance, an invented ward, for the year 03/01/2025 to 02/28/2026.
The cash tie-out
The form lays out five lines but never prints the equation that joins them. On the form they run total income, total disbursements, net income, last cash, then ending cash.
last cash + income − payments = ending cash
Eleanor’s figures:
| Cash on last account | $18,412.06 |
|---|---|
| Income this period | 20,381.18 |
| Total | 38,793.24 |
| Disbursements | (15,391.17) |
| Ending cash | $23,402.07 |
Ending cash must match the cash total in Part I.B. See both on the court’s copy (opens in a new tab)
Where the income and payments came from
| Social Security, $1,284.00 × 12 | $15,408.00 |
|---|---|
| Pension, $412.50 × 12 | 4,950.00 |
| Interest | 23.18 |
| Total income | $20,381.18 |
| Nursing facility cost of care, $1,150.00 × 12 | (13,800.00) |
|---|---|
| Pharmacy | (612.40) |
| Personal needs, $40.00 × 12 | (480.00) |
| Clothing | (318.77) |
| Bond premium | (150.00) |
| Filing fee, last year’s account | (30.00) |
| Total disbursements | ($15,391.17) |
Prove ending cash against the accounts
| Checking register, after #1047 | $3,402.07 |
|---|---|
| Savings | 20,000.00 |
| Held in the accounts | $23,402.07 |
| Ending cash, counting #1047 this year | 23,402.07 |
| Difference | 0.00 |
The register and ending cash agree. Check #1047 ($86.40) is outstanding on the statement.
When it won’t tie out
A transfer between the ward’s own accounts
Eleanor’s guardian moved $5,000.00 from checking to savings. It is neither income nor a disbursement. Entered as income, it makes ending cash $28,402.07 against $23,402.07 in the accounts. Entered on both sides, the account ties but both totals are $5,000.00 too high. A deposit into the ward’s ABLE account is the same case only if you list the ABLE account with the cash in Part I.B.
A voided check
Only the replacement check belongs in disbursements. Leave the void in and ending cash comes out below the bank by exactly its amount.
A check written but not yet cleared
Check #1047 for $86.40 went out before 02/28/2026 and cleared after. The register shows $3,402.07 in checking; the statement shows $3,488.47.
The form doesn’t say which balance goes in ending cash. Count the check in the year you wrote it (book) or the year it cleared (bank), and use the same rule every year.
After you file
A trust clerk examines the account and reports to the court. The court then accepts the account or sets a hearing. Rule 10-708 (opens in a new tab)
Any interested person who asks for a copy gets one from you. Rule 10-706(b)(1) (opens in a new tab)
The final account
If you petition to end the guardianship, file a final account with the petition. It covers any time your annual accounts didn’t, and adds how you propose to distribute what is left. Md. Rule 10-710(f)
SSA and VA reports
If you are also the ward’s payee or VA fiduciary, you file those reports too. Each covers a different period, and SSA-623 counts only Social Security and SSI, so the totals won’t match.
| Report | Covers | A VA deposit is |
|---|---|---|
| CC-GN-012 | The whole estate, guardianship year | Income |
| SSA-623 | SSA and SSI money, SSA’s 12 months | Not reported |
| 21P-4706b | Everything you manage for the VA beneficiary, the period in the VA’s letter | Income |
If the ward receives VA benefits, also send a certified copy of this account to the VA office for the area where the court sits. Rule 10-706(b)(2) (opens in a new tab)
