What it asks for

Indiana’s guardianship inventory follows the rule for a dead person’s estate. Give the fair market value of each item, and list every known lien on it, such as a mortgage on the house. Sort the property into seven classes. IC 29-1-12-1 (opens in a new tab)

The classes of an Indiana inventory
ClassWhat goes there
Real propertyEach parcel with its plat or survey description, marked if it is a homestead
Furniture and household goodsTheir value
Emblements and annual cropsCrops raised by labor, and their value
Corporate stocksThe class, the par value or that it has none, and a preferred stock’s dividend rate
Mortgages, bonds and notesEach by the debtor’s name and recording data
Bank accounts, money and insuranceAccounts and cash, and insurance payable to the estate
All other personal propertyEverything else, including a share in a partnership

If a disinterested appraiser valued anything, put the appraiser’s name and address beside those items. Marion County wants values as of the day you were appointed. Marion Form 412.1 (opens in a new tab)

Common mistakes

Filing without the notice

Notify everyone who got notice of the guardianship hearing, the same way. The notice gives the cause number, says you must account at least every two years, and says where the inventory can be read. IC 29-3-9-5(a) (opens in a new tab)

Assets found after filing

Marion County lets you file an amended inventory, or describe the new asset in your next account: what it is, its value, and when it came in. Marion LR49-PR00 411.7 (opens in a new tab)

Your first account

The inventory values open your first account, in its first schedule. Counties differ on when that account is first due.
