Personal propertyBank accounts, stocks and bonds, mutual funds, retirement accounts, life insurance cash value, vehicles, jewelry, art, furnishings. One item per line, with any loan or lien on it. Household goods of low value can be grouped.
Real estateEach property’s street address, title reference and fair market value, with any mortgage or lien balance.

Filing it

Deliver the copies by hand or first-class mail before you file. The cover has a certificate for it, which you sign with the inventory. There is no filing fee. Probate and Family Court filing fees (opens in a new tab)

Common mistakes

Values from the day you file

Use the balances and values on the date of appointment. Appointed April 17, you ask the bank for April 17.

Full account numbers

Give the bank’s name and the last four digits only.

A house valued net of its mortgage

Value means fair market value without deduction for the mortgage. The mortgage balance goes on the same line.

Amending the inventory for property found later

Property you find after filing goes on your next account. It enters Schedule A at its value on the date of appointment.

The first line of Schedule A on your first MPC 853 is this inventory’s total, personal property and real estate together.
